Receiving Dempsey in Hanoi on August 14, Thanh lauded the results of Vietnam-US talks on defence cooperation and said both sides should effectively implement agreements reached within the framework of the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership established in 2013 and a memorandum of understanding on defence cooperation signed in 2011.
Vietnam wants to share experience and increase cooperation with the US in various areas, including visit exchanges, search and rescue, and military medical training, as well as in overcoming the consequences of the past war and joining UN peacekeeping operations.
General Thanh expressed hope that General Dempsey and his entourage will make additional positive contributions to developing Vietnam-US relations, including defence ties.
For his part, Dempsey acknowledged Thanh’s proposal and said he would try his best to strengthen ties between the two countries.
Earlier the same day, Deputy Defence Minister Lt. Gen. Do Ba Ty, Chief of General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, held talks with Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, who is in Hanoi for a visit from August 13-16.
