Cambodia: opposition senator faces 7 years in jail

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on November 7 sentenced opposition Senator Hong Sok Hour to seven-year imprisonment for forgery and incitement.

In August last year, Hong Sok Hour, 59, was arrested for posting on Facebook a fake version of a Cambodia-Vietnam border treaty. The member of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) was charged with falsifying public documents and inciting chaos to social security.

Presiding judge Ros Piseth said the verdict was delivered following thorough examinations of relevant documents and evidence.

Hong Sok Hour and his lawyers did not present at the court to hear the verdict.

Previously, in October, CNRP lawmaker Um Sam An was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and a fine of 4 million Riel (US$1,000) over the same charges.
