Vietnam emerges as one of world’s fastest growing travel destinations
VOV.VN - Vietnam was ranked fourth in 2024 among the world’s fastest growing travel destinations, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

In 2024, the number of foreign tourists to Vietnam reached 17.4 million, increased by 38.64% compared to the same period last year. This put country far ahead of other Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand (up 26.27%, 12th place), Laos (up 25.29%, 13th place), Malaysia (up 24.20%, 15th place), Cambodia (up 22.87%, 16th place), and Singapore (up 21.22%, 20th place).
The Republic of Korea topped the ranking list with a year-on-year increase of 48.82% in the number of tourists, followed by Japan (up 47.09%) and Chile (up 40.42%).
UNWTO data also revealed the global list of countries receiving the most and least visitors in 2024. France topped the list with 102 million arrivals, followed by Spain with 93.7 million, the United States with 72.3 million, China with 65.7 million, Turkey with 60.5 million, Italy with 57.7 million, Mexico with 45 million, Germany with 37.5 million, the UK with 37.2 million, and Japan with 36.7 million.
In Southeast Asia, Thailand welcomed 35.5 million visitors, ranking 12th while Malaysia received 25 million, ranking 17th. Vietnam received 17.4 million holidaymakers, placing it 24th.
Of the 195 countries that have provided tourism data to the UNWTO, Tuvalu recorded the lowest number of annual visitors, with just 200 arrivals in 2022. This figure is equivalent to the number of passengers on a single flight. According to the UNWTO, data for Tuvalu during the 2023–2024 period is not yet available.
