Vietnam becomes top international destination for Australian travellers

VOV.VN - Vietnam has recently emerged as one of the most popular international destinations among Australian travellers, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

In the first quarter of 2025, the number of Australian visitors to Vietnam increased by 54% compared to the same period in 2019, far surpassing many other traditional destinations.

Sky News Australia recently reported that Vietnam is now at the top of the list for Australians seeking meaningful cultural adventures. With high-quality travel experiences at a fraction of the cost of other major destinations, the Southeast Asian country offers exceptional value.

The report described Vietnam as a vibrant, dynamic nation rich in cultural identity. Visitors are drawn to its unique blend of history, cuisine, natural landscapes, and warm local hospitality.

Nicole Newport, regional sales manager for Oceania at InsideAsia Tours, told news.com.au that there is “clear evidence that Vietnam is quickly becoming a top-choice destination”, and this trend is expected to continue.

“The destination’s close proximity to Australia and rich variety of experiences – from historic cities and chaotic market streets to towering natural landscapes – the sheer variety of scenery means a visit to Vietnam can feel like several countries in one,” she explained.

She also noted that more travelers than ever are seeking meaningful cultural experiences that go beyond standard tourist routes, and Vietnam fits this demand perfectly.

Financial factors also contribute to Vietnam’s growing appeal. According to Travel Money Oz, the favorable exchange rate between the Australian dollar (AUD) and the Vietnamese dong (VND) has been a key driver.

A spokesperson for the company stated that Vietnam consistently delivers incredible value for Australian travelers. With the AUD steadily strengthening against the VND in recent months, visitors can enjoy even more for less—a typical meal or taxi ride costs about AUD5, while a 1-liter bottle of purified water is just around 80 cents.

Meanwhile, travel platform Klook reported a remarkable 250% increase in hotel bookings in Vietnam from March to June 2025 compared to the same period last year.

The most sought-after destinations in Vietnam for Australian tourists currently include Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, Ha Long Bay, and Hoi An.
