UK flight searches to Hanoi surge 103% amid cold weather, falling fares
VOV.VN - Online searches for flights from the United Kingdom to Hanoi (Vietnam) have soared by 103% year on year between February and March as British holidaymakers seek warmer destinations and competitive long-haul fares, according to travel data cited by the Daily Mail.
Search platform Kayak reported a sharp increase in demand for Vietnam’s capital during late winter, a period when the UK has experienced prolonged rainfall and low temperatures. Average temperatures in Hanoi range around 24°C in February and March, significantly warmer than conditions in the UK.
Hanoi is also widely regarded as one of Southeast Asia’s most budget-friendly capitals, with low daily living costs compared to major European cities.
A glass of local beer costs just VND25,000 (around £0.72), while a soft drink is priced at approximately VND12,000 (£0.35). A three-course meal for two typically comes to VND800,000 (£22.90).
Round-trip airfares from the UK to Hanoi are currently averaging £628, nearly £450 lower than prices recorded several months ago, according to the report. However, fares for mid-March departures can reach as high as £1,071, reflecting seasonal demand fluctuations.
Travel journalist Hugo Brown recently visited Hanoi and wrote on the Daily Mail that he spent just £19.60 in a single day, covering a hotel stay and three meals with drinks.
Meanwhile, Rachel Mumford, a travel expert at Kayak, said search data indicates British travelers are willing to consider long-haul destinations when value for money aligns with favourable weather conditions.
She noted that Hanoi had attracted particular attention thanks to its combination of affordability and favourable weather conditions.
'Vietnam stands out because it combines reliable warm weather with low everyday costs once you arrive, making a long-haul trip feel far more affordable,' Rachel added.
She added that travellers with flexible departure dates can make significant savings by flying earlier rather than waiting until later in the season.
