Tan Son Nhat airport to handle over 1,000 daily flights during Tet peak

VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City-based Tan Son Nhat International Airport is expected to operate more than 1,000 flights per day during peak travel days of the Lunar New Year 2026 holiday (Tet), as passenger demand surges across Vietnam’s busiest aviation hub.

During the holiday period, the airport is projected to serve around 145,000 passengers per day, with an average of about 940 flights daily, up 25% from normal operations and 7% year on year, airport authorities said.

Traffic is forecast to peak on February 13-14 (26th and 27th days of the twelfth lunar month), when flight movements may reach 1,017 per day. Another surge is expected after Tet, on February 22-23 (6th and 7th days of the first lunar month), with approximately 1,025 flights daily.

To cope with the increase, Tan Son Nhat is coordinating with airlines to move most domestic flights to the newly opened Terminal T3. Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines, Vasco, Bamboo Airways, Vietravel Airlines and Sun Phu Quoc Airways will operate domestic services from T3, while Vietjet Air will continue operating from Terminal T1.

The airport has also rolled out digital identity verification and biometric boarding systems, alongside new signage at Terminal T3, aimed at improving passenger flow and reducing processing times. Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS) at both T1 and T3 have been upgraded to provide clearer and more comprehensive flight information, helping passengers avoid terminal confusion.

Meanwhile, during the Tet period from February 10 to 16, Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi is expected to serve more than 725,000 passengers, up 16% year on year, across 4,467 flights, an increase of 12%.

The busiest day is forecast to be February 15 (28th day of the twelfth lunar month), with around 116,000 passengers and 674 flights.

Post-Tet travel demand is expected to remain high, with 737,000 passengers and 4,530 flights projected. The peak day is forecast to be February 22, when Noi Bai could handle 117,200 passengers and 676 flights, the highest level on record.

This year, congestion at Noi Bai’s Terminal T2 has been significantly eased following expansion works that came into operation in late 2025. With additional check-in counters and baggage belts, T2 can now serve over 50,000 international passengers per day.

Terminal T1 has optimized all 98 existing check-in counters and maintains backup counters in halls A, B, and E to accommodate added flights or relieve localized congestion.

At Terminal T2, the synchronized deployment of self-service check-in kiosks, automated baggage drop systems, automated security gates, and smart screening equipment helped shorten processing times and reduce long queues.
