Plan to promote night tours of historical sites in Ayutthaya

Several historical sites and tourist attractions in the inner city of Ayutthaya will be decorated with lights to promote night tours of the former capital of Thailand.

Culture Minister Vira Rojpojchanarat attended a meeting to discuss a master plan on the conservation and development of the Historical City of Ayutthaya, before the Cabinet retreat in Ayutthaya province on 19 September 2017.

Mr. Vira said that the Ministry of Culture had worked out the master plan, under which local people would play a greater role in helping preserve and develop historical sites. In 2017, the Cabinet approved 15 projects, with a budget of 337 million baht, to improve the landscape of major temples in Ayutthaya. These projects also involve light decorations at tourist and historical sites.

Mr. Vira said that the Ministry of Culture was also preparing a cultural route, linking the Historical City of Ayutthaya with the Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns. It would also develop the quality of various cultural attractions, so that they would become world-renowned tourism sites.

He instructed the development of the landscape inside the Ayutthaya Historical Park, as well. More personnel would be trained to look after the historical park, while new constructions near the park would be controlled. Historical structures affected by flooding have also been renovated.

A former capital of Thailand, Ayutthaya is famous for monumental remnants of old palaces and temples spread across a tranquil landscape. It was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on 13 December 1991.
