Mekong Tourism Forum 2025 in Laos charts path to greener, more connected region
VOV.VN - The Mekong Tourism Forum (MTF) 2025 officially opened on June 26 in Luang Prabang, Laos, under the theme “United Journey, Stronger Together”, with a strong focus on regional cooperation, green growth, and sustainable tourism.
Delegates from six Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries gathered to discuss enhanced connectivity, innovation, and inclusive tourism development. In her opening remarks, Lao Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Darany Phommavongsa said the forum demonstrated shared commitments to sustainable tourism and alignment with the GMS Sustainable Tourism Strategy 2030.
In 2023, the GMS region welcomed over 86 million international tourists and earned US$158 billion in revenue, supporting more than 20 million jobs. The region now targets US$200 billion in annual tourism revenue by 2030. Deputy Minister Darany highlighted the Mekong’s rich cultural and natural heritage as a key foundation for building a competitive and resilient tourism industry.
Luang Prabang Vice Governor Bounlueam Manivong underlined the province’s central role in regional tourism strategies. With UNESCO World Heritage status and over 1,200 years of history, the locality drew 2.32 million visitors in 2024 and saw a 129% year-on-year increase in arrivals in the first five months of 2025. He noted ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity via the Laos–China railway and other transport links while preserving cultural identity.
“The MTF 2025 is a vital platform for strengthening cooperation and building a shared vision for 2026–2030,” he said.
A key highlight of the forum was the launch of the GMS Tourism Strategy 2026–2030, jointly developed by member states with support from the Asian Development Bank and the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office. The strategy prioritises green tourism, climate resilience, cross-border connectivity, high-quality cultural and eco-tourism products, digital transformation, and stronger participation of communities and the private sector in tourism planning.
