Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City among world’s top 100 cities to explore on foot
VOV.VN - Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have been named among the world’s 100 best cities to explore on foot in 2026, according to GuruWalk, a Spain-based platform specialising in free walking tours.
The list also includes Hoi An, underscoring Vietnam’s presence in walking-based urban tourism.
The ranking evaluates destinations based on ease of movement, density of attractions, accessibility and overall experience for visitors exploring cities on foot. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City were recognised for their distinctive urban character, closely located points of interest and vibrant street life.
This year’s list continues to be led by European cities, with Rome ranking first, followed by Madrid, Budapest and Prague. These destinations stand out for their compact historic centres and high concentration of landmarks that can be visited within walking distance.
Beyond Europe, the ranking also features cities in Asia and the Americas, including Tokyo, Kyoto and New York. The presence of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City points to the growing appeal of Southeast Asian cities on the global tourism map.
Observers note that Hanoi’s strength lies in its Old Quarter, where narrow streets, dense commercial activity and traditional cultural spaces make it well suited to leisurely walking. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City attracts visitors with its dynamic pace, a mix of historic and modern architecture, and a diverse street food scene.
The inclusion of Vietnam’s two largest cities in the ranking highlights the potential for urban tourism development, as well as a shift towards more sustainable travel, with visitors increasingly favouring slower and more environmentally friendly ways of exploring destinations.
The GuruWalk list serves as a reference for international travellers when choosing destinations, particularly for those interested in discovering local culture through walking, a form of travel that is both cost-effective and immersive.
