Domestic airlines to increase flights to serve travel demand during Tet holiday

VOV.VN - Vietnamese airlines have rolled out a series of measures to meet surging travel demand during the coming Lunar New Year holiday (Tet), including adding flights, opening new routes and expanding fleets, particularly from Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam Airlines announced it will operate nearly 300 additional flights, offering around 60,000 extra seats during the peak travel period from February 9 to March 3. The increased capacity focuses on key domestic routes linking Ho Chi Minh City with Hanoi, Da Nang, Hue, Vinh, Thanh Hoa, Hai Phong and several central and southern destinations.

The national carrier has also launched four new routes from Hai Phong to Nha Trang, Can Tho, Buon Ma Thuot and Phu Quoc, aiming to diversify travel options and ease pressure on major trunk routes during the holiday peak. Passengers are encouraged to use biometric identification and online check-in to reduce congestion at airports.

Meanwhile, Vietravel Airlines is expanding its network with the launch of a new Ho Chi Minh City–Vinh route from February 1, operating up to three daily round trips during the Tet period. The airline said it is also strengthening its workforce, including recruiting additional cabin crew, to ensure smooth operations during the peak season.

During the peak period, the airline plans to launch 6 to 8 flights per day on the HCM City-Hanoi route, 3 flights per day on the HCM City-Da Nang and HCM City-Vinh routes, and 2 flights per day on the HCM City-Quy Nhon route. Vietravel Airlines also makes plans to increase the number of flights at nights.

VietJet Air, a leading budget airline, also received three new A321neo aircraft in the early days of 2026. This is considered part of the airline's plan to add 22 new aircraft to serve the peak Tet holiday season.

Besides, Bamboo Airways recorded positive signs as the number of Tet ticket bookings rose sharply, with many routes from HCM City to Thanh Hoa, Vinh, and Quy Nhon almost fully booked. According to Truong Phuong Thanh, General Director of Bamboo Airways, the airline expects to increase its capacity by 16% across its entire domestic network.

In addition to resuming flights on key routes such as HCM City to Vinh, Thanh Hoa, and Hai Phong, Bamboo Airways is set to lease additional aircraft to meet travel demand.

According to domestic airlines, this year's Tet holiday market shows positive signs. As of January 12, Vietravel Airlines' bookings have grown strongly, especially during the period from February 14 to 22. On the HCM City-Quy Nhon and HCM City-Vinh routes, the occupancy rate has reached 100%, with many days having no seats available. Main routes such as HCM City-Hanoi and HCM City-Da Nang also saw seat occupancy rates of above 70%.
