Developing Thailand into the world’s top location for foreign filmmaking

The Department of Tourism, under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, is stepping up efforts to develop Thailand into the world’s top location for foreign filmmaking.

Vice Minister for Tourism and Sports Lieutenant Commander Worawit Techasupakura told a press briefing that a total of 714 foreign film projects were shot on location in Thailand in 2018.

Although the number was less than that in 2017, which registered at 810 projects, Thailand’s earning from the projects in 2018 were 3,149 million baht, compared to 3,074 million baht in 2017. Incentive measures offered by the Thai government partly makes Thailand a popular shooting location among international film producers.

The Department of Tourism is preparing various activities as part of Thailand International Film Destination Festival 2019, to be held from 25 March to 2 April 2019 at Siam Square One in Bangkok. According to Lieutenant Commander Worawit, the organizing of this festival is a strategy to publicize Thailand’s readiness to become one of the leading locations in the world for both Thai and foreign filmmakers.

The theme of this year’s Thailand International Film Destination Festival, the seventh of its kind, is "Beyond Destination Thailand.” On this occasion, Thailand will make its 55  secondary tourist cities better known among filmmakers. Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Krabi are currently among the most attractive destinations for foreign filmmakers.

Thailand’s diverse geographical characteristics, historical sites, natural beauty, local cultures, and the hospitality of the people have made the country attractive for international film producers.
