Austrian tourist rescued after getting lost overnight in Vietnam forest
VOV.VN - An Austrian tourist who got lost in a remote forest in Vietnam’s northern Lang Son province has been safely rescued, thanks to the timely support of local villagers.
Flo Florian on March 31 rented an off-road motorbike to explore the mountainous area of Xuan Duong commune. However, while following directions on Google Maps, he lost control of the vehicle on a steep slope deep in the forest. With limited off-road experience, he was unable to move the motorbike back onto the trail.
After several hours of unsuccessful attempts, the exhausted traveler abandoned the vehicle at around 5 p.m. and tried to find his way out on foot. Unfortunately, he ended up venturing deeper into the forest and was forced to spend the night there.
According to Trieu Van Luu, a 30-year-old Dao ethnic resident of Xuan Duong commune, locals first noticed something unusual when villagers collecting bamboo shoots heard strange calls echoing from deep within the forest. As darkness fell and visibility worsened, they reported the situation to local authorities.
A search effort was quickly organised, but challenging terrain and nightfall forced rescuers to suspend the operation temporarily.
The following morning, Luu received a call from a man in Da Nang who had tracked down his contact information via online maps and was seeking help for the missing foreign tourist. Around the same time, another local resident informed village authorities that a foreign man had appeared at his home in a distressed condition.
“When I arrived, there were already several people gathered. The man looked exhausted and frightened. He even knelt down repeatedly, seemingly pleading for help,” Luu recalled.
Due to the language barrier, communication was initially difficult. Locals used translation apps on their phones to understand the situation, helping Florian calm down and explain what had happened.
Shortly afterward, local police arrived to verify his identity and assess the situation. A group of villagers then returned to the forest to retrieve the stranded motorbike.
Upon seeing his vehicle again, Florian became visibly emotional. He reportedly knelt down in gratitude, shaking hands and hugging each of the villagers who had helped him.
The tourist attempted to offer around VND 3 million (approximately US$120) as a token of appreciation, but the locals politely declined.
“We helped him because he needed it, not for money,” Luu said.
Florian has since recovered physically and emotionally. He was later assisted by fellow travelers in returning to Hanoi before his departure from Vietnam in the coming days.
For the villagers, many of whom belong to ethnic minority communities and rarely interact with international visitors, the experience was both meaningful and memorable.
“We’re happy we could help. It’s not often we get to meet foreign visitors, and supporting someone in need made us feel proud,” Luu added.
