Australian media: Vietnamese banh mi has become part of the culture
VOV.VN -Australia’s ABC News reports that a Sydney-based banh mi appreciation group has helped renew Australians’ interest in the Vietnamese baguettes.
In Sydney, the love for bánh mì is apparent by the long queues snaking outside of bakeries across the city in suburbs like Cabramatta, Marrickville and Ryde.
ABC News revealed that nine years ago, Rowan from Sydney's inner west started the Facebook group Vietnamese Bánh Mì Appreciation Society on a whim.
"I eat them a lot and always have. Every neighbourhood I've lived in has had a Vietnamese bread shop. They have permeated the culture," Rowan told the media outlet.
Currently, the Facebook group of 155,000 members reviews and recommends the sandwich across Australia, from spots in Sydney's thriving Vietnamese communities to Queensland's Darra and the Parap Markets in Darwin.
Rowan shared that it's so nice to see people rave about their favourite bánh mìs from across Australia, including small country towns in the middle of nowhere.
In Australia, numerous Vietnamese bánh mì outlets have gone viral on social media, including Marrickville Pork Roll, established in 2008, and Top Ryde Baker’s House, which has been operating for 15 years. A recent TikTok review video featuring the latter attracted as many as 1.5 million views. Australians have widely praised Vietnamese cuisine, with bánh mì in particular enjoying strong popularity.
ABC News stressed that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese even previously shared an Instagram photo of himself having a baguette at the shop which sits in his electorate.
At present, many Vietnamese bánh mì shops are thriving in Sydney’s southwest, as Australians from all walks of life increasingly embrace not only Vietnamese culture but also the vibrant flavours and fresh ingredients that define the country’s cuisine. Many see bánh mì as one of the Vietnamese community’s key success stories in Australia, adding a distinctive taste to the nation’s multicultural society often referred to as the “Land of Kangaroos.”
