VOV.VN - The EC has recognised Vietnam’s significant progress in combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing over the past eight years, while urging the country to address remaining shortcomings to build a sustainable fisheries management system and move toward lifting the “yellow card".

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired the 32nd meeting of the national steering committee for combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing on March 3, which was held in person at the Government headquarters in Hanoi and connected online with 22 coastal provinces and cities.

In its determined efforts to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, Quang Tri province is tightening supervision, from fishing ports to offshore grounds. Alongside strict monitoring of unqualified vessels, the province is encouraging livelihood transition to foster a sustainable and efficient fisheries sector.

Vietnam is orienting the development of its fisheries sector towards responsibility and sustainability by reducing exploitation, expanding aquaculture, and protecting aquatic resources.

Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son and Minister for Environmental Protection and Green Transition of Croatia Marija Vučković co-chaired a panel discussion themed “Fostering sustainable fisheries management including supporting small-scale fishers” in Nice, France, on June 11 (local time).

Adnan Hussain, Director General of the Department of Fisheries Malaysia under Malaysia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and Sumathy Permal, head of the Centre of Maritime Security and Diplomacy (MSD) of Malaysia, have shared their experience in sustainable fisheries development and cooperation with Vietnam in the field.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) forecast that aquatic product exports will bounce back at the end of the third quarter and reach the yearly revenue target of US$10 billion.
