VOV.VN - Vietnam is considering a significant proposal in the draft amendment to the 2025 Penal Code by replacing the death penalty with life imprisonment without parole, and the proposal was discussed at a thematic session on law-making of the government in Hanoi on April 13.
President Nguyen Xuan Phuc on August 12 decided to reduce death penalties to life sentences for 21 prisoners, including two foreigners.
The People’s Court of HCM City on September 22 handed down severe sentences to 20 criminals, most of whom are members of the reactionary organisation “Trieu dai Viet” (Viet Dynasty), found guilty of “terrorism to oppose the people’s administration” and “illegally manufacturing, storing and trading explosives”.
“The death penalty could be considered for such act in accordance with the Penal Code. In this very urgent situation, when the whole country is trying hard to fight COVID-19, it is necessary to strictly punish such acts for deterrence."
