The Agreement under the UNCLOS on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (or High Seas Treaty), which took effect on January 17, opens up unprecedented opportunities for Vietnam to advance sustainable growth of its marine economy.

Vietnam is orienting the development of its fisheries sector towards responsibility and sustainability by reducing exploitation, expanding aquaculture, and protecting aquatic resources.

Vietnam’s first national marine reserve - Bach Long Vi Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Hai Phong city - has played a vital role in preserving marine biodiversity and promoting sustainable fisheries since its establishment.

The Prime Minister’s Directive No.29/CT-TTg dated November 1, 2021 has been issued which requires ministries, agencies and localities to take urgent measures to improve the efficiency of management of Vietnam’s marine protected areas (MPAs).
