Wushu athletes take two golds for Vietnam at SEA Games 33
VOV.VN - Wushu delivered a major boost for Vietnam at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand on December 15, securing two gold medals and ending the team’s gold-medal drought of the day.
Athlete Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy claimed the first gold medal for Vietnam on the sixth official day of competition, defeating Myanmar’s representative in the women’s 60kg Sanda (Sanshou) final.
Competing in a three-round bout, Thu Thuy demonstrated clear dominance, winning outright in the opening round in under two minutes due to an overwhelming points advantage. The victory provided a timely morale lift for the Vietnamese team on December 15.
The success continued shortly after when Truong Van Chuong grabbed Vietnam’s second gold medal of the day by defeating a Lao opponent 2–0 in the men’s 70kg Sanda final. With these results, Wushu athletes successfully met their medal target at the Games.
In Kickboxing, Vietnamese fighter Bui Thi Yen Nhi was narrowly defeated 1–2 by a Philippine opponent in the women’s Low Kick 48kg semifinals, earning a bronze medal.
Meanwhile, in Pétanque, Vietnam’s women’s triples team fell 7–13 to hosts Thailand in the final, settling for the silver medal.
In Weightlifting, Nguyen Thi Thuy Tien won silver in the women’s 63kg category after lifting 98kg in the snatch and 121kg in the clean and jerk, for a total of 219kg. The gold medal went to Philippine lifter Elreen Ann Ando, who totalled 229kg.
In team sports, the Vietnam women’s handball team produced a dominant performance, defeating the Philippines 28–8 in the semifinals to advance to the gold-medal match.
In men’s 5x5 basketball, Vietnam suffered a 67–78 loss to the Philippines in the group stage, despite holding a lead of up to 14 points earlier in the game.
In cycling, Vietnamese riders Lam Thi Kim Ngan and Nguyen Thi Thu Mai missed out on medals in the women’s individual time trial, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.
