Vietnam’s rising star wins U14 rapid chess world title

VOV.VN - Nguyen Nam Kiet brought home one gold medal in the U14 rapid chess category at the FIDE World Cadet & Youth Rapid & Blitz Championships 2025 held in Greece on April 15.

Kiet earned a total of nine points from 11 matches and triumphed in the U14 rapid chess, which attracted a total of 43 masters. His teammates Dau Khuong Duy and Duong Vu Anh came second and third, respectively.

In the other boys’ categories, Vietnamese chess players Nguyen Bao Nam clinched a silver medal in the U8 rapid chess, whilst Hoang Tan Vinh bagged a bronze medal in the U10 rapid chess.

Vietnam also pocketed one silver medal won by Nguyen Thanh Huong in the girls’ U12. Meanwhile, Tran Hoang Bao An and Nguyen Binh Vy finished third in the girls’ U10 and U18, respectively. All of the wins were achieved in the rapid pools.

The tournament organised by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) began on April 12 and is scheduled to last through to April 18, drawing the participation of 430 competitors from 48 countries and territories worldwide. 

Vietnam has sent a total of 40 masters to the tournament and they have so far won one gold, three silver, and four bronze medals in the rapid chess event. They will continue to compete in the blitz categories on April 16 and April 17.
