Vietnamese footballer honoured at 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

VOV.VN - Local player Tran Thi Thu led the way in term of blocks made per 90 minutes at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which concluded in Australia and New Zealand on August 20.

According to statistics released by global football governing body FIFA, the Vietnamese defender earned a total of 5.9 points to take the lead in the list of footballers who made the most successful blocks in one match at the tournament.

Her teammate Le Thi Diem My ranked fourth with a score of 5.3 points.

The second and third positions went to Bambanani Mbane of South Africa and Danielle van de Donk of the Netherlands, respectively.

This comes after local goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh came sixth in terms of making the most saves at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Thanh made a total of 15 important saves in the country’s three defeats against the United States, Portugal, and the Netherlands, conceding 12 goals in the process.

After three losing matches against the US, Portugal, and the Netherlands, Vietnam finished bottom of Group E with zero points and were therefore eliminated from the 2023 Women’s World Cup. However, their strong performance at the global tournament received plenty of praise from international media.

The Vietnamese national women’s football team led by head coach Mai Duc Chung are preparing for the 19th Asian Games (ASIAD 19) that will kick off in Hangzhou in China in September.
