Goalkeeper Kim Thanh honoured at 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup
VOV.VN - Local goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh came sixth in terms of making the most saves at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which concluded in Australia and New Zealand on August 20.
According to world’s football governing body FIFA, Thanh made 15 important saves in the country’s three defeats against the United States, Portugal, and the Netherlands, conceding 12 goals in the process.
Vietnam's opening match against the US on July 22, FOX Sports praised Vietnamese goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh as one of the best players on the pitch.
FIFA also hailed Thanh’s performance, posting on Twitter, “Tran Thi Kim Thanh take a bow. The Vietnamese keeper has had a sensational first half and now saves an Alex Morgan penalty on the stroke of half-time!”
Goalkeeper Kim Thanh, 30, is known for being the shield of the Vietnamese national women’s football team.
Whilst wearing the jersey of the national team, she won the SEA Games in 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2023; the 2019 AFF Cup; and finished third at the 2018 AFF Cup.
After three losing matches against the US, Portugal, and the Netherlands, Vietnam finished bottom of Group E with zero points and therefore eliminated from the 2023 Women’s World Cup. However, their good performance at the global tournament received plenty of praise from international media.
In the list of most saves at the competition, goalkeeper Daniela Solera of Costa Rica took the lead with 22 saves, followed by Zecira Musovic of Sweden, Olivia Daniel of the Philippines, Mackenzie Arnold of Australia, and Rebecca Spencer of Jamaica with 21, 18, 18, and 17 saves, respectively.
