Vietnamese athletics sets ambitious goals at coming Olympics, ASIAD
VOV.VN - The Vietnam Athletics Federation (VAF) has set ambitious goals to achieve breakthroughs at major coming international competitions, including the 2028 Olympics, 2026 Asian Games (ASIAD), and SEA Games.

Among the goals, it aims to win a full set of gold-silver-bronze medals at the 2034 ASIAD and have at least 2 or 3 athletes qualify for the Olympic Games.
The goals, part of the Vietnamese Athletics Development Plan for 2030 with a vision for 2045, were unveiled at the Federation’s eighth National Congress for the 2025–2029 term in Hanoi on April 25.
To meet the goals, the Federation will invest in young, promising athletes to reach regional and international standards. It will conduct regular training camps for national teams and youth squads; focus on Vietnam’s strengths in sprinting, middle-distance, and long jump; and continue sourcing talent through sports schools and regional training centres.
Currently, the Vietnam Sports Administration is also finalising a national key sports development plan for Olympic and ASIAD preparation through 2046, to be submitted to the Prime Minister.
Vietnam continues to be a regional powerhouse, topping the athletics medal table at the 2019 and 2021 SEA Games, and finishing second in 2023. The sport’s contribution has been pivotal to the country’s overall ranking at regional multi-sport events.
Meanwhile, marathons and mass-participation races have surged in popularity across the country, becoming not just athletic events but also cultural and community phenomena involving hundreds of thousands of participants annually.
Despite past achievements, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Sports Administration Nguyen Hong Minh urged stronger planning and clearer pathways, noting shortcomings in developing elite athletes capable of competing at the Asian and global levels.
