Vietnam women’s football team earn SEA Games semifinal spot
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s women’s football team clinched a dominant 2-0 victory over Myanmar in Thailand on December 11, topping Group B and advancing to the semifinals of the 33rd SEA Games.
Following a narrow 0-1 loss to the Philippines in their second group match, the Vietnamese women faced a must-win scenario against Myanmar in their final group-stage match. A victory would guarantee progression to the semifinals, and a win with a significant goal margin could see Vietnam top the group. Failure to win would result in elimination.
Vietnam came out with determination and applied early pressure, breaking the deadlock in the 8th minute. Tran Thi Duyen delivered a perfect cross into the Myanmar penalty area, allowing Van Su to rise above the defence and head the ball into the net, giving Vietnam a 1-0 lead.
Just six minutes later, Vietnam doubled their advantage. Hoang Thi Loan’s persistence forced Myanmar’s defence to clear the ball awkwardly, falling straight to Bich Thuy, who made no mistake in converting to make it 2-0.
With a two-goal cushion, Vietnam were able to control the game. Van Su continued to be a threat, creating opportunities, and came close to adding a third, but her header was off target.
The remaining minutes saw the Vietnamese women play pragmatic football, focusing on preserving their lead. The 2-0 victory ensured Vietnam finished top of Group B with 6 points and a goal difference of +8.
In the same round of matches, the Philippines defeated Malaysia 6-0, finishing second in the group with 6 points and a goal difference of +6.
In the semifinals, Vietnam will face Indonesia, while Thailand, who topped Group A, will play the Philippines.
