SEA Games 33: First gold for Vietnam’s Karate athletes
VOV.VN - Three Vietnamese karate fighters Nguyen Thi Phuong, Nguyen Ngoc Tram, and Hoang Thi Thu Uyen triumphed over their Thai opponents to claim a gold medal in the women’s team kata at the ongoing 33rd SEA Games on December 11, marking the first gold medal earned by Vietnam’s karate squad in the competition.
Phuong, alias Kata Queen, and her teammates chose the Tomari Bassai kata for their performance, a 5-minute routine that is considered difficult and demands a high level of precision. With flawless technique, excellent expression, and perfect synchronisation in every movement, the Vietnamese women's kata team impressed the judges and secured a resounding victory.
Karate remains a key martial art for Vietnamese sports delegation, with 19 athletes competing across men’s and women’s kumite and kata categories. Notably, this year’s tournament excluded individual kata categories, featuring only team kata. Under tournament regulations, participating countries could enter just 12 out of 15 karate events, while hosts Thailand were allowed to compete in all categories.
Earlier, the Sports Authority of Vietnam announced reward bonuses for medal-winning karate fighters at SEA Games 33, including VND10 million for each gold medal, VND7 million for silver, and VND5 million for bronze. These bonuses, sourced from sponsors and social contributions, aim to motivate and encourage the athletes.
At present, the Vietnamese delegation has secured six gold, five silver, and 16 bronze medals, placing second on the SEA Games 33 medal standings.
