Vietnam secure SEA Games semifinal spot with convincing win over Malaysia

VOV.VN - Vietnam delivered a dominant 2-0 win over Malaysia in their final group-stage match at the ongoing SEA Games 33, securing top spot in Group B and a place in the men’s football semifinals.

The victory came as coach Kim Sang-sik’s side showcased relentless pressure and clinical finishing.

From the outset, Vietnam displayed a high level of intensity and urgency, determined to claim all three points. Their attacking pressure paid off early, as Malaysia’s defence struggled to cope with the relentless onslaught.

After just 11 minutes, Vietnam opened the scoring. A well-executed corner from Dinh Bac found center-back Hieu Minh, who rose high to head the ball past Malaysian goalkeeper Zulhilmi, giving Vietnam the lead.

Dinh Bac was a constant threat throughout the first half, tormenting Malaysia’s defence with his dribbling and pace. In the 21st minute, he set up a second goal, dribbling to the byline and delivering a precise cross to Minh Phuc, who calmly slotted the ball into an empty net to double the advantage for Vietnam.

With a 2-0 lead, Vietnam asserted dominance in the midfield, stifling any Malaysian offensive attempts. Despite some sporadic pressure, Malaysia failed to create significant threats on Vietnam’s goal.

The second half saw U22 Vietnam continue to control the game, with Malaysia unable to break through their solid defensive lines. The Vietnamese side comfortably managed possession and thwarted Malaysia’s long-ball approach.

It wasn’t until the 82nd minute that Malaysia registered their first serious attempt at goal, with a header from number 17 that hit the arm of Vietnam’s Phi Hoang. The Malaysian players appealed for a penalty, but the referee waved play on.

The match ended with a comfortable 2-0 win for Vietnam, as they sealed their place in the semifinals as Group B winners with 6 points. The victory sets them up for a clash with the Group C runners-up, once that group’s final matches are played.
