Vietnam U20 women set to beat Thailand at AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2026
VOV.VN - Vietnam U20 women’s team are determined to beat Thailand in their second Group A match at the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2026.
Vietnam opened their campaign with a 0-3 loss to China. Despite the defeat, head coach Okiyama Masahiko praised his team’s discipline and fighting spirit.
He said the side made a positive start, showing determination and sharpness in the first half, and maintained a strong fighting spirit after the break despite facing one of Asia’s top teams. “China are among the strongest sides in Asia. We also made a few mistakes that led to the first two goals,” he said.
According to the Japanese coach, Vietnam played a compact defensive game, waited for chances to counter-attack and did so quite effectively for much of the match. He said the team did not lose their structure after conceding and followed their tactics.
“China did not beat Vietnam easily. Our players stayed disciplined, and several of their players suffered cramps,” he added.
Vietnam will next face Thailand on April 4 in a key match in the race for second place in Group A. The coaching staff are prioritising recovery ahead of the game.
“For the match against Thailand, we will continue with our defensive, counter-attacking play, aiming to win the ball and launch effective counter-attacks,” Okiyama said.
Under the tournament format, the top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, advance to the quarter-finals. Vietnam still have a chance to progress if they secure a positive result against Thailand.
