Vietnam U19 notch back-to-back wins in Japan in World Cup pursuit
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s U19 football team have earned consecutive victories over older opponents during a training camp in Japan as part of their pursuit of a World Cup berth.
The team continued its strong run during the training tour after defeating local opposition in consecutive matches. On May 16 and 17, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi’s side beat the U20 and U22 teams of Shizuoka Sangyo University by 2-1 and 3-2, respectively.
In the first match, the young Vietnamese players played with confidence and efficiency to secure a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Trong Duc Vu and Thanh Vinh.
In the rematch against the university’s U22 side, Vietnam U19 continued its impressive form with a 3-2 win through goals by Thien Phu, Van Bach and Quoc Khanh.
Vietnam U19 are scheduled to play two more friendly matches against Tokai Gakuen University and the reserve side of Shimizu S-Pulse on May 19 and 21.
The training camp in Japan runs from May 14 to 26 with a 30-player squad. The team is currently based in Nagoya and maintaining a high training intensity. The trip serves as an important preparation phase ahead of the 2026 Southeast Asian U19 Championship, which will take place in Indonesia in early June.
At the regional tournament, Vietnam U19 are in Group A alongside Indonesia, Timor-Leste and Myanmar, with hosts Indonesia considered the toughest opponent in the group. However, with careful preparation in both technical and mental aspects, the Vietnamese side is expected to build a solid foundation for its longer-term goals.
This generation of players will form the core of Vietnam’s U20 team in its bid for a place at the 2027 FIFA U20 World Cup.
With Asia allocated four direct slots and one intercontinental play-off place, the opportunity for Vietnam’s youth football teams to return to the world stage after a 10-year absence is becoming clearer than ever.
