Vietnam U19 drawn with hosts Indonesia in ASEAN U19 Boys’ Championship
VOV.VN - Vietnam U19 have been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Indonesia, Myanmar and Timor-Leste at the ASEAN U19 Boys’ Championship 2026 following the draw on May 7.
Group B comprises Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, while Group C includes Australia, Cambodia and the Philippines.
The tournament will take place in Indonesia from June 1 to June 14. The three group winners and the best second-placed team will advance to the semi-finals.
The tournament will serve as an important preparation for regional teams ahead of the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers.
To prepare for the tournament, Vietnam’s U19 squad have held several training camps since the beginning of the year. In the current camp, coach Yutaka Ikeuchi’s side have been training at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center since April 29, although the squad is not yet at full strength.
In the coming weeks, the coaching staff will continue adjusting training plans and reviewing and assessing the squad in order to gradually finalise the core lineup.
Vietnam’s U19 team will travel to Japan for a training camp and friendly matches from May 18 to May 26 to improve overall performance and fine-tune their playing style before heading to Indonesia for the tournament.
The ASEAN U19 Boys’ Championship has been held annually since 2002. Thailand and Australia are the competition’s most successful teams, with five titles each.
Vietnam have won the tournament once, in 2007, while also recording several runner-up and third-place finishes. At the most recent edition in 2022, Vietnam’s U19 side featuring Dinh Bac, Quoc Viet, Van Truong and Nhat Minh, claimed the bronze medal, also in Indonesia.
