Vietnam U17 women head to China to chase World Cup spot
VOV.VN - Vietnam U17 women’s team departed for China on April 28 to compete at the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup China 2026, which acts as a qualifier for the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.
Earlier, the squad, under head coach Okiyama Masahiko, left the Vietnam Youth Football Training Centre in Hanoi for Noi Bai International Airport to complete check-in procedures.
The team will have a relatively long journey, transiting through Shanghai before arriving in Suzhou later the same day. The city will host the tournament from May 1 to 17.
Twelve teams are divided into three groups, with eight advancing to the quarter-finals. The top two teams from each group qualify directly, along with the two best third-placed teams.
Vietnam are in Group A alongside Thailand, Myanmar and hosts China. Their chances of advancing to the knockout stage are considered feasible.
The four semi-finalists will represent Asia at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
Before departure, the team met and received encouragement from Tran Quoc Tuan, President of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF). He urged the players to study their opponents, develop suitable tactics, maximise their individual strengths and team spirit, and maintain determination and focus in all situations.
