Vietnam shock Serbia at FIVB Women’s U21 World Championship

VOV.VN - Vietnam on August 8 pulled off a stunning 3-1 victory over Serbia in the second match of Group A at the ongoing FIVB Women’s U21 World Championship 2025 in Indonesia.

Facing World No.9 opponents, head coach Nguyen Trong Linh kept the same starting lineup that had defeated hosts Indonesia in the opening match.

Key players like Dang Thi Hong, Nguyen Phuong Quynh, Pham Quynh Huong, Le Nhu Anh, Ngo Thi Bich Hue, and Lai Thi Khanh Huyen played with confidence and strong teamwork.

In the first set, despite Serbia’s powerful and tall attackers, the Vietnamese players entered the game with energy and composure. With effective offence and solid defence, Vietnam won the opening set 25-21.

Serbia bounced back strongly in the second set, taking the lead at crucial moments. Though Vietnam closed the gap to 23-24, they narrowly lost the set 23-25, leveling the match at 1-1.

Undeterred, Dang Thi Hong and her teammates delivered an impressive performance in the third set. Even after Serbia equalized at 19-19 following a 13-18 deficit, Vietnam maintained their focus to close out the set 25-22.

The fourth set saw Vietnam stage a remarkable comeback. Trailing 6-10, they scored five consecutive points to take the lead and then surged ahead, eventually winning 25-23 to seal a 3-1 overall victory.

This unexpected but thrilling win over European opponents earned Vietnam a full 3 points and a shared top spot in Group A alongside Argentina, greatly boosting their chances of advancing to the knockout round.

Vietnam will face Canada at 1:00 p.m. on August 9 in their third group-stage match.
