Vietnam set sights on 2025 ASEAN Women’s Championship title
VOV.VN - Playing on home turf, head coach Mai Duc Chung and his squad aim to make history for Vietnamese football by taking the 2025 ASEAN Women’s Championship trophy as the tournament begins on August 6.

At the pre-tournament press conference on August 5, head Coach Mai Duc Chung affirmed that the Vietnam women's national team were entering the competition with the highest determination and a clear goal of winning the championship title.
He emphasised the team’s respect for all opponents, including Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Indonesia, and expressed hope that home advantage would fuel their ambition to reach the top.
“We are grateful to the ASEAN Football Federation and the Vietnam Football Federation for organising this tournament. It is an important opportunity for all Southeast Asian teams to train and improve ahead of the coming SEA Games. I value both Group A and Group B equally. Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines have all made visible progress. I’ve followed their recent friendly matches, and they’ve all shown solid preparation,” stated the experienced coach.
Vietnam have been drawn in Group A alongside Thailand, Indonesia, and Cambodia, with matches taking place at Lach Tray Stadium in Hai Phong. Group B will be held in Viet Tri (Phu Tho), featuring the Philippines, Myanmar, U23 Australia, and Timor Leste.
The tournament follows a single round-robin format, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals.
Vietnam are scheduled to play Cambodia in the opening match at 7:30 p.m. on August 6. Earlier, at 4:30 p.m., Thailand will face Indonesia.
With home advantage and superior squad quality, captain Huynh Nhu and her teammates are widely expected to secure a strong victory in their opening game and gain momentum in the race to the semi-finals.
“Playing at home is both an advantage and a pressure. But with the support of fans in Hai Phong and across the country, we’ll give our best in every match to achieve our ultimate goal of winning the championship and making history,” said team captain Huynh Nhu.
Cambodian players have made efforts to improve their skills recently. Several US-born players have been called up, and the team are now led by Japanese head coach Koji Gyotoku, who also coaches Cambodia’s men’s national team. He recently finished leading the U23 men’s side at the ASEAN U23 Championship.
The match against Cambodia is seen as a crucial opportunity for Vietnam to not only secure three points but also a convincing win that could provide a key advantage in the race to the semifinals.
