Vietnam secures broadcasting rights to 2024 Paris Olympics

VOV.VN - Vietnam Television Cable Corporation (VTVcab) announced on August 8 that it has the won official broadcasting right to show the 2024 Olympics in Paris, the world’s biggest sporting event from August 8 to August 12.

VTVcab has become the only broadcaster in Vietnam to hold the rights. This comes after no local broadcaster had secured the rights to show the world’s biggest sporting event due to high costs.

At the 2020 Olympics, the price was 10 times higher compared to the 2016 Olympics, with the price even higher at the 2024 Olympics. Vietnam has been granted the rights to broadcast several outstanding events such as the final round of men’s and women’s football, as well as the closing ceremony.

More than 100 countries and territories hold the rights to broadcast the 2024 Olympics. In Southeast Asia, countries such as Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines also own the broadcasting rights.

The Paris games initially began on July 26 and will last through to August 11 in the French capital, with the participation of nearly 11,000 athletes from 206 countries and territories worldwide.

Vietnam has just ended its second straight Olympics without winning any medals. The Vietnamese sporting delegation went home empty handed after their final athlete failed to advance to a podium position on August 8.

In the summer of 2016, marksman Hoang Xuan Vinh made history by claiming one gold and one silver medal at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, thereby becoming the most successful Vietnamese athlete in Olympic history.

To date, the nation has accumulated a total of five Olympic medals, garnered by four athletes. This number has remained stagnant over the past eight years.
