Vietnam narrowly defeat Thailand 1-0 at 2025 ASEAN Women’s Championship
VOV.VN - As expected by Coach Mai Duc Chung and supporters, Vietnamese girls defeated their longtime opponents Thailand with a narrow 1-0 score on August 12 to secure the top Group A spot at the ongoing 2025 ASEAN Women’s Championship.

The final Group A match only served to determine the first and second place to decide the semifinal pairings, as both the Vietnamese and Thai women’s teams had already secured advancement. With a one-goal advantage, Thailand held the upper hand and only needed a draw against Vietnam to claim first place in Group A.
Meanwhile, coach Mai Duc Chung’s team had to win to assert their position as the number one team in the region and to face potentially easier opponents in the semifinals. However, Group B remains unpredictable, with no team guaranteed advancement yet, and the three teams - Australia, Myanmar, and the Philippines are all strong.
From the start of the first half, Thailand took the initiative to attack, controlling possession more and creating several dangerous chances in front of Vietnam’s goal. But, the first clear scoring chance belonged to the hosts when Bich Thuy took a shot in the 11th minute. Although unmarked, her rushed shot flew over the crossbar.
Afterward, Vietnam continuously created good chances, but it was not until the 36th minute that the hosts broke the deadlock. Huynh Nhu delivered a long pass from the right wing, bypassing defenders and crossing perfectly for Thu Thao, who quickly volleyed the ball past the Thai goalkeeper, leaving her no time to react.
In the final minutes of the first half, Vietnam had another very good chance to double the lead, but the home team’s forwards failed to capitalise.
After the break, Thailand increased pressure, pushing forward to find an equalizer, yet they could not challenge goalkeeper Kim Thanh. Meanwhile, the Vietnamese defence remained solid, cohesive, and resilient against the opponent’s attacks. The hosts deliberately slowed the tempo, opting for a cautious style with a deeper defensive line while waiting for opportunities to launch quick counterattacks from Huynh Nhu and her teammates.
In the 68th minute, coach Mai Duc Chung made tactical changes by substituting Bich Thuy and Hai Linh with Thanh Nha and Van Su. These changes quickly caused waves of danger toward the Thai goal.
Coach Mai Duc Chung continued to make substitutions, with Hai Yen replacing Huynh Nhu, adding sharpness to the attack. Ten minutes later, Thanh Nha showcased her excellent individual skills and fired a decisive shot from a tight angle, but the ball hit the post, much to the Vietnamese players’ disappointment.
In the final minutes, Thailand tried to produce several attacks but failed to seriously threaten the home team’s goal. The match ended 1-0 in favour of Vietnam, helping coach Mai Duc Chung’s team claim first place in Group A.
Vietnam will face the runners-up of Group B in the semifinals.
