Vietnam beat Indonesia 7–0, enter ASEAN Women’s Championship semifinal

VOV.VN - Vietnam defeated Indonesia 7–0 in their second Group A match at lach Tray stadium in hai Phong on August 9, officially securing a place in the semifinals of the 2025 ASEAN Women’s Championship with one group-stage match still to play.

Facing the lower-ranked opponents, coach Mai Duc Chung’s players quickly took full control of the game, creating a series of dangerous attacks.

Despite missing several clear opportunities in the first 20 minutes, the home side broke the deadlock in the 25th minute with a goal from Bich Thuy. Just three minutes later, Hoang Thi Loan doubled the lead with a decisive strike, allowing Vietnam to finish the first half in complete command. Throughout the opening 45 minutes, Indonesia barely threatened goalkeeper Khong Thi Hang’s net.

In the second half, Vietnam’s dominance continued. Although Hai Linh’s goal in the 53rd minute was disallowed for a foul in the box, the hosts kept extending the gap. Substitute Hai Yen scored twice in the 70th and 85th minutes while Ngan Thi Van Su added a goal in the 71st and Thu Thao struck in the 80th. Tuyet Dung capped the victory with a goal in the 90th minute.

“I’m actually not fully satisfied with the players’ performance,” coach Mai Duc Chung said after the match. “If we had taken our chances better, we should have won 10–0. I rotated the starting lineup to prepare for the next game, and the younger players didn’t play as well as expected. The second-half performance was better.”

After two matches in Group A, both Vietnam and Thailand have 6 points. Due to a lower goal difference, Vietnam currently sit second but are guaranteed a semifinal spot. The direct clash between the two teams on August 12 will decide the group winners and thus the semifinal matchups.

Speaking about the Thai side, Chung commented: “We have watched Thailand play their first two games. They have a squad with many young players, plus some naturalized players. Our goal is to beat Thailand to win the group. In my view, the chances are 50–50. The team that asre luckier and more clinical will take first place.”

Thailand have not beaten Vietnam in Southeast Asian competitions for many years. In 2019, Vietnam defeated Thailand 1–0 in the AFF Cup final, then repeated the scoreline in the SEA Games final. At the 31st SEA Games in 2022, Vietnam again won 1–0 in the final against Thailand.
