Vietnam miss out on SEA Games 33 gold after penalty shootout loss to Philippines
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s women’s national football team failed to defend their SEA Games title after losing 5–6 to the Philippines in a penalty shootout in the final of SEA Games 33 on the evening of December 17.
The match at Chonburi Daikin stadium (Thailand) ended goalless after 120 minutes and was overshadowed by a controversial refereeing decision that disallowed a legitimate goal by Vietnam.
Vietnamese players entered the match aggressively, pushing their defensive line high and controlling possession. Head coach Mai Duc Chung’s side created several early chances, including efforts from Van Su and captain Huynh Nhu, but were unable to convert.
The turning point came in the 29th minute. From a wide attacking move, the ball was delivered into the penalty area where Bich Thuy rose to head the ball powerfully into the net from close range.
However, the assistant referee raised the flag for offside, and the goal was ruled out. Television replays later showed that Bich Thuy was level with, or even behind, the last Philippine defender at the moment the ball was played, sparking strong protests from the Vietnamese bench and players.
Soon after, veteran coach Chung voiced his frustration when Van Su was fouled by an opponent without any disciplinary action taken. A series of disputed decisions appeared to affect Vietnam’s composure. The first half ended 0–0, despite Vietnam holding the upper hand.
In the second half, Vietnam continued to dominate possession and apply sustained pressure, forcing the Philippines into deep defensive positions. However, the Philippines’ physical advantage helped them withstand repeated attacks. Neither side managed to break the deadlock in regulation time, sending the match into extra time.
During the additional 30 minutes, the Philippines focused on defensive resilience with the clear intention of forcing a penalty shootout. The strategy proved successful. In the shootout, Vietnam’s Tran Thi Thu missed her attempt in the sixth round, allowing the Philippines to secure a 6–5 victory.
The final whistle brought tears from players on both sides. The Philippines made history by claiming their first-ever SEA Games women’s football gold medal, while Vietnam were left to rue a missed opportunity to claim a fifth consecutive regional title, despite a determined performance.
