Vietnam claim two golds at Asian Taekwondo Championships

VOV.VN - Vietnam’s taekwondo team have turned in a strong performance on the second day of competition at the 2026 Asian Taekwondo Championships in Mongolia, winning two gold medals and securing two qualification spots for the 2026 Asian Games.

In the women’s under-40 standard poomsae team event on May 20, the trio of Chau Tuyet Van, Nguyen Thi Le Kim and Lien Thi Tuyet Mai won gold for Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Le Thanh Trung, Nguyen Thien Phung and Nguyen Van Truong took gold in the men’s under-40 standard poomsae team event.

In addition to the two gold medals, Vietnam also earned one silver and one bronze medal. Le Tran Kim Uyen and Pham Quoc Viet claimed silver in the under-30 mixed pair standard poomsae event, placing second behind athletes from the Republic of Korea (RoK).

The trio of Le Ngoc Han, Nguyen Thi Kim Ha and Le Tran Kim Uyen won bronze in the women’s under-30 standard poomsae team event.

Earlier, on the opening day of competition, Chau Tuyet Van secured silver in the women’s under-40 individual standard poomsae event, while Le Thanh Trung earned bronze in the men’s under-40 individual standard poomsae category. Nguyen Xuan Thanh also won bronze in the men’s under-30 individual freestyle poomsae event.

Notably, Nguyen Xuan Thanh and Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang secured two qualification spots for the 2026 Asian Games in individual poomsae. It marks the first time the Asian Games has used results from the Asian Taekwondo Championships as a qualifying event.

Vietnam’s taekwondo team will continue competing later on May 20 in freestyle pair and team poomsae events before moving into sparring events from May 21.

The Asian Taekwondo Championships are typically held every two years. At the 2024 edition in the central city of Da Nang, Vietnam also won a gold medal in the sparring event through Bac Thi Khiem.

The trio of Chau Tuyet Van, Nguyen Thi Le Kim, and Lien Thi Tuyet Mai brought home one gold medal in the U40 women's standard poomsae team on May 20. On the same day, their teammates Le Thanh Trung, Nguyen Thien Phung and Nguyen Van Truong came first in the U40 men's standard poomsae team.

One silver medal went to Le Tran Kim Uyen and Pham Quoc Viet in the U30 mixed doubles poomsae, behind the South Korean athletes. The trio of Le Ngoc Han, Nguyen Thi Kim Ha, and Le Tran Kim Uyen took one bronze medal in the U30 women's poomsae team.

Earlier, on the first competition day, Chau Tuyet Van bagged one silver medal in the U40 women's individual standard poomsae. Two bronze medalists were Le Thanh Trung in the U40 men's individual standard poomsae, and Nguyen Xuan Thanh in the U30 men's individual creative poomsae.

In particular, Nguyen Xuan Thanh and Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang secured two slots at the 2026 Asian Games (ASIAD) in the individual poomsae. This is the first time the Asian Taekwondo Championships’ results have been used to consider the participation of athletes at the ASIAD.

The Vietnamese team continued to compete in doubles and team events of the creative poomsae before the sparring competition will take place from May 21.

The Asian Taekwondo Championships are organized every two years. In the 2024 edition held in Da Nang, Vietnamese taekwondo team made its mark with one gold medal in the sparring won by Bac Thi Khiem.

This year's tournament opened in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on May 19 and runs through May 26.
