Nguyen Thi Loan wins silver at 2026 US Open Taekwondo Championships

VOV.VN - Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Loan secured a silver medal in the women’s 53kg category at the 2026 US Open Taekwondo Championships, the best result for the Vietnamese team at the tournament.

The competition concluded early on March 9 (Vietnam time) in Las Vegas, the US.

Vietnam fielded four athletes in the combat events, including Tran Ho Nhan Van, Nguyen Hong Trong, Nguyen Thi Mai and Nguyen Thi Loan.

Among them, Loan delivered the strongest performance, advancing to the final of the women’s 53kg division, which featured 45 competitors.

She progressed through the earlier rounds before facing Nivea Barros of Brazil in the final. Loan finished with the silver medal after losing to the Brazilian fighter in the title bout.

In other results, Nguyen Thi Mai competed in the women’s 49kg category but failed to reach the podium. Nguyen Hong Trong and Tran Ho Nhan Van also competed in their respective divisions without winning medals.

Before the combat events, the tournament also staged its poomsae competitions. Vietnamese athlete Chau Tuyet Van won a gold medal in the women’s individual U40 category and also earned a bronze medal in the mixed pair freestyle poomsae event.

The 2026 U.S. Open Taekwondo Championships is part of the World Taekwondo ranking system, allowing athletes to earn points ahead of qualification tournaments for the 2028 Olympic Games.

It was also the first international competition of the year for Vietnam’s taekwondo team.

In the overall standings, Vietnam finished 16th overall with one silver medal, while host nation the US topped the table with three gold, five silver and seven bronze medals.
