Vietnam claim bronze at Women's IHF Nations Trophy
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s national handball team secured the bronze medal at the Asian Zone IA of the Women's IHF Nations Trophy following a 25–20 victory over Chinese Taipei in the third-place match on October 18.
This achievement reflects the dedicated efforts of the players and serves as a positive sign for the future of Vietnamese women’s handball on the international stage.
Taking place in Hong Kong (China) from October 14 to 18, the 2026 Asian Zone IA of the Women's IHF Nations Trophy featured six teams divided into two groups. The tournament’s winners earn a spot in the 2026 Asian Women’s Handball Championship which will take place in Kazakhstan.
Vietnam played in Group B alongside Mongolia and Chinese Taipei. They made an impressive start with a commanding 42–16 victory over Mongolia. They then edged out Chinese Taipei 21–20, claiming the top spot in Group B and advancing to the semi-finals.
Hong Kong (China) presented a huge challenge for Vietnam in the semi-finals. Despite scoring 13 goals in the first half, the Vietnamese side struggled to maintain its attacking effectiveness after the break, allowing the hosts to take control.
Lei Ling Wu led Hong Kong with 13 goals as the hosts secured a 23–21 victory. The narrow defeat ended Vietnam’s hopes of reaching the final, but the team had another opportunity to finish the tournament on the podium.
That opportunity came in the rematch against Chinese Taipei the following day. Having edged their opponents by a single goal in the group stage, Vietnam produced a more convincing performance in the bronze-medal match, winning 25–20 to secure third place.
Vietnam’s bronze medal was complemented by the scoring contribution of Nguyen Thi Anh Tuyet, who finished second in the tournament’s top-scorer rankings with 25 goals, only two goals fewer than Lei’s.
In the final, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPR Korea) defeated Hong Kong 25–22 to claim the title with four wins from four matches. The victory also secured DPR Korea’s place at the 2026 AHF Asian Women’s Handball Championship.
