Victory Cup 2023 honours best sportsmen of the year

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese national women’s volleyball team won a big haul of awards at an award ceremony of the Cúp Chiến Thắng (Victory Cup) held in Hanoi on January 16 evening.

The female volleyball squad grabbed the Best Team of 2023 title, while coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet received the Best Coach of the Year award, and captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy was awarded the Best Athlete of the Year title.

Thuy, who currently plays as an outside hitter for the PFU Blue Cats of Japan, was voted the favourite athlete of the year. She won a total of 17,074 votes, twice as many as second-placed swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang with 9,729 votes.

Last year the female volleyball squad became the champions of the Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship and the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Challenge Cup. In addition, they also won tickets to the FIVB Challenger Cup and FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship.

On the men's side, marksman Pham Quang Huy claimed the Male Athlete of the Year award after he won a gold medal at the 19th Asian Games (ASIAD 19) in Hangzhou, China. The 28-year-old man made Vietnamese history, becoming the first marksman to win an ASIAD gold medal.

His coach Park Chung-gun of the Republic of Korea took the limelight by winning the Foreign Coach of 2023 title in recognizing his contribution to the Vietnamese shooting team over the years.

In other categories, four women of the sepak takraw team who won gold medals in the world championship, Asian Games, and SEA Games were honoured in the Teammates of the Year Award.

Furthermore, Tran Thi Ngoc Yen took the cup in the Young Player of the Year category.

Local weightlifter Le Van Cong lifted the cup for the third time after receiving the Athlete with Disabilities of the Year Award.

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Le Buu, former director of the Sports Authority of Vietnam.

Victory Cup has been held since 2015 the Vietnam Sports Administration (VSA), Vietnam Cable Television (VTVcab), and Vietcontent Sports. Considered the Oscar award of Vietnamese sports, it aims to honour top candidates in 11 different categories. A big bonus of about VND750 million was also awarded to all of the winners.
