UK’s Daily Mail hails planned Hanoi stadium as ‘twice the size of Old Trafford’

VOV.VN - UK tabloid the Daily Mail has published an article hailing a planned stadium project in Hanoi as “twice the size of Old Trafford”, citing its proposed capacity of up to 135,000 seats.

By comparison, Old Trafford, Manchester United’s home ground, holds around 74,000 spectators.

According to the Daily Mail, Hanoi authorities have officially approved plans to construct the Trong Dong Stadium as part of the vast Olympic Sports City project, with the residential and sporting district expected to cost £28 billion in total.

The newspaper noted that the stadium is set to be at the centre of the project, with officials saying the venue will host large-scale sports, cultural and socio-political events, while contributing to enhancing Vietnam’s standing on the international stage.

According to the plans, the UK outlet reported, the stadium’s architecture is inspired by the Dong Son bronze drum, a symbol of ancient Vietnamese civilisation representing community spirit, strength and longevity.

“It is claimed this will combine Vietnam’s traditional culture with a modern venue, helping to achieve the ambition of delivering an iconic venue,” the Daily Mail said.

The paper added that the Trong Dong Stadium would surpass the Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in terms of seated capacity, with the venue estimated to accommodate up to 114,000 spectators, depending on configuration.

“It would also exceed Morocco’s Hassan II Stadium, which is being built ahead of the 2030 World Cup, with a capacity of around 115,000,” the Daily Mail noted.

The stadium is also said to feature the world’s largest retractable roof, alongside a design that emphasises energy efficiency and the use of environmentally friendly materials. According to the report, the project is expected to provide Vietnam with a platform to host major international events such as the World Cup, the Olympics and other continental tournaments.

The Daily Mail also reported that the stadium is scheduled for completion by 2028, while the overall project, which includes a transportation system, a new urban area and additional sporting facilities, is due to be completed by 2035.
