Thien Truong Stadium selected for Vietnam-Malaysia Asian Cup qualifier
VOV.VN - The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has selected Thien Truong Stadium in northern Ninh Binh province as the venue for the decisive Asian Cup 2027 qualifier between hosts Vietnam and Malaysia, a match widely seen as a de facto group final.
This decision comes at a time when the showdown is widely regarded as a pivotal encounter, virtually determining the group’s sole ticket to the final tournament.
Vietnam sit second in Group F with 12 points from five matches, three behind leaders Malaysia, who have a perfect record. Under the competition rules, only group winners qualify directly for the 2027 Asian Cup finals.
To overtake Malaysia, Vietnam must win by a margin of at least four goals, following their 4-0 loss in Kuala Lumpur in June 2025.
VFF formally requested approval from Ninh Binh’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism on January 21, describing the choice of Thien Truong as a strategic decision aimed at maximising home advantage and crowd intensity.
Thien Truong Stadium that accommodate around 30,000 spectators has long been dubbed as one of Vietnam’s most intimidating “cauldrons.” As the home ground of the reigning V.League champions, the venue has previously hosted major football events, notably men’s group-stage matches at the 31st SEA Games.
Vietnam have also played friendlies at Thien Truong in the past, including matches against Syria in 2023 and India in 2024, both leaving positive impressions in terms of performance and atmosphere.
Malaysia currently lead Group F with 15 points, a goal difference of +14 and 15 goals scored, while Vietnam have a +6 goal difference with 11 goals. Head-to-head results take precedence in the event of a tie on points, increasing the pressure on the hosts to secure a decisive victory.
