SEA Games 33: 16 gold medals for Vietnam on Day 8

VOV.VN - Vietnam won 16 gold medals on December 17, the eighth official competition day of the 33rd SEA Games, helped it maintain third place on the overall medal table and narrow the gap with second-placed Indonesia.

In the morning, rowing contributed three gold medals from four events. Ho Thi Duy won gold in the women’s lightweight single sculls, while Hoang Van Dat and Nguyen Phu claimed gold in the men’s lightweight double sculls. The women’s quadruple sculls title went to Bui Thi Thu Hien, Nguyen Thi Giang, Dinh Thi Hao, and Pham Thi Hue.

Shooting continued to boost Vietnam’s medal tally with two gold medals. Nguyen Thuy Dung, Nguyen Thuy Trang, and Trinh Thu Vinh secured gold in the women’s 25m sport pistol team. In the individual final between Thu Vinh and Thuy Trang, both athletes set new SEA Games records, forcing a dramatic playoff. Thu Vinh ultimately prevailed to claim the gold medal.

Despite ongoing controversies surrounding Pencak Silat at SEA Games 33, Vietnamese athletes Nguyen Tan Sang and Nguyen Duy Tuyen demonstrated clear superiority, convincingly defeating their opponents to secure two gold medals for Vietnam.

Vietnam’s Greco-Roman wrestling team also enjoyed a perfect day, with all four athletes advancing to the finals. Nguyen Cong Manh, Nghiem Dinh Hieu, and Nguyen Minh Hieu went on to win gold medals. Fencing added to the success with two gold medals, claimed by Nguyen Xuan Loi and Nguyen Phuoc Den.

Tran Dinh Thang captured gold for Vietnam in weightlifting, while the women’s handball team continued their strong showing as the sport returned to the SEA Games after a one-edition absence. In Muay Thai, Nguyen Thi Chieu and Nguyen Thi Phuong Hau each secured gold medals, rounding off a highly successful day for the Vietnamese delegation.

Vietnam pocketed 16 gold medals on the day, bringing its total to 64 golds, ranking third overall behind hosts Thailand and Indonesia.
