Shooter Thu Vinh claims four golds, sets three SEA Games records
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s shooter Trinh Thu Vinh delivered another standout performance on December 17, reinforcing her status as the country’s leading shooting star at the 33rd SEA Games after winning four gold medals and breaking three Games records.
Her most dramatic moment came in the women’s 25m sport pistol, where she and teammate Nguyen Thuy Trang produced a tense one-two finish. Both shooters scored 34 points, jointly setting a new SEA Games record and forcing a play-off to decide the gold medal.
In the decisive shoot-off, Thu Vinh showed remarkable composure. After falling behind 0–2, she mounted a strong comeback to win 3–2, claiming the gold medal, while Thuy Trang settled for silver. The victory highlighted not only her technical ability but also her mental resilience under pressure.
Earlier on the same day, Thu Vinh played a key role in helping Vietnam secure gold in the women’s 25m pistol team. Across the Games, she has now amassed four gold medals, making her one of Vietnam’s most successful athletes at this edition.
Her gold medals came in the women’s 25m sport pistol (Games record), women’s 25m pistol team, women’s 10m air pistol team (Games record), and women’s 10m air pistol (Games record), underlining her versatility across both individual and team disciplines.
This marks the first time Thu Vinh has topped the podium at a SEA Games, after competing at the 31st edition on home soil without winning gold. The four titles at SEA Games 33 therefore represent a major breakthrough for the 24-year-old shooter and signal a new chapter in her career.
As of 11:30 AM on December 17, Vietnam had secured 53 gold, 57 silver, and 78 bronze medals, placing third in the SEA Games medal standings.
