Quang Liem wins Biel Grandmaster Triathlon for second consecutive time
VOV.VN - Vietnamese chess player Le Quang Liem took the lead at the Grandmaster Triathlon in the Classical Biel International Chess Festival 2023, which was held in Switzerland on July 26.
Despite using black pieces, Liem convincingly beat top seed Yu Yangyi, whilst the remaining three games all ended as draws.
Former co-leaders David Navara and Vincent Keymer slipped to shared second place, two points behind Vietnamese frontrunner Quang Liem.
The Vietnamese player scored five points in rapid, 8.5 points in blitz, and 19 points in standard, earning 32.5 points in total.
This is the second consecutive time the Vietnamese grandmaster, Elo 2,728, has won the Biel Grandmaster Triathlon title.
Liem duly received a cash prize of US$11,000 for his championship title at the Biel tournament. In the upcoming rankings of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the grandmaster will have new Elo rating of 2,740.
His teammate Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son finished in ninth position in the standard chess after scoring a total of six points over nine games.
Quang Liem will continue to compete in the FIDE World Cup 2023 taking place from July 29 to August 25 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
