After two days of competition, Nguyen finished with 2 wins, 2 draws, and 1 loss, earning 7 points, one point less than Wenjun.

If Nguyen plays well in the final day of the competition, she will have the opportunity to win a medal.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese grandmaster Le Quang Liem ranked 35th after the second day of competition with 3 points (2 wins, 2 draws, and 1 loss) and failed to be named in the leading group.

Notably, Vo Thi Kim Phung has put in some exceptional performances, coming away with 3 wins and 1 loss, to rank in 23rd place.

The 2017 King Salman World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships is set to wrap up on December 31.

The lucrative competition offers a huge prize fund of US$2 million, split into US$1.5 million for the two men’s events and US$0.5 million for the women’s.

This year, Le Quang Liem and Pham Le Thao Nguyen are the most hopeful contenders for the Vietnamese side.
