Marksman Hoang Xuan Vinh to compete at upcoming Tokyo Olympics
VOV.VN - Marksman Hoang Xuan Vinh is set to represent Vietnam at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Vietnam Sports Administration announced on July 1.
Vinh and his teammates had originally failed to secure a place at the Tokyo Olympics after many international tournaments were cancelled or delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has later offered a slot to a Vietnamese athlete in the men's 10m air pistol category and therefore asked the Vietnamese side to send an outstanding marksman to participate in the Games this July.
Due to his recent strong performances in daily training, Hoang Xuan Vinh has been chosen to represent the country at the upcoming international competition.
The 47-year-old marksman has experience in making it through to the final round of global tournaments eight times, including the Olympic Games and International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup where he won three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.
Most notably, Vinh made history at the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil when the veteran marksman brought home a gold medal in the men's 10m air pistol, the first of its kind for Vietnam at Olympic Games.
The Vietnamese sport delegation will participate in the Tokyo Olympics in Japan between July 23 and August 8.
Shooting is another sport that Vietnam will have representatives at the global competition, along with taekwondo, swimming, gymnastics, boxing, badminton, rowing, archery, weightlifting, and track-and-field.
