Liem jumps to 15th place in world chess rankings

VOV.VN - Local chess player Le Quang Liem has climbed six positions to reach 15th place with an Elo of 2740, thereby being among the top 100 players for August, according to the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

This marks the top ranking ever achieved by the Ho Chi Minh City-born player.

He has also become the first Vietnamese person to enter the world’s top 15 players in terms of FIDE rankings.

Carlsen Magnus led the FIDE rankings in August with an Elo of 2835. The others among the top five are Nakamura Hikaru and Caruana Fabiano of the United States, Ding Liren of China, and Nepomniachtchi Ian of Russia.

The Vietnamese player ranked behind Aronian Levon of the US who came 14th in the world’s list. He was followed by Dominguez Perez Leinier, also from the US, who was at 16th position in the globe.

Most recently, Liem took the lead at the Grandmaster Triathlon in the Classical Biel International Chess Festival 2023 which was held in Switzerland on July 26.

The Vietnamese player scored five points in the rapid, 8.5 points in the blitz, and 19 points in the standard events, thereby earning 32.5 points in total.

This marks the second consecutive time that the Vietnamese grandmaster, Elo 2728, has won the Biel Grandmaster Triathlon title.

Liem duly received a cash prize of US$11,000 for his championship title at the Biel tournament. In the August rankings of the FIDE, the grandmaster boasts a new Elo rating of 2740 and jumped from 21st to 15th positions in the world.

He is currently present in Baku, Azerbaijan, to compete in the FIDE World Cup 2023 which is taking place from July 29 to August 25.
