Golden Racket Table Tennis Tournament returns after 7 years
VOV.VN - The 34th Golden Racket International Table Tennis Tournament has returned to Ho Chi Minh City after a seven-year break, bringing together more than 100 players from six countries and territories for four days of competition.
The tournament opened at Ho Xuan Huong Indoor Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City on November 5, marking the revival of one of Vietnam’s long-standing table tennis events. It aims to meet the anticipation of fans and reflect the city’s efforts to preserve and develop a respected international sporting event.
Running from November 5 to 8, the competition features 19 men's teams and 11 women's teams from Japan, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong (China), Laos and Vietnam. They are competing in four disciplines - men's team, women's team, men's singles and women's singles.
The participation of international teams is expected to raise the competitive standard of the tournament, giving Vietnamese players valuable opportunities to gain experience and improve their performance against overseas opponents.
However, several national team players are unable to participate as they are preparing for the 2026 Southeast Asian Table Tennis Championships in Malaysia.
Promising Vietnamese players taking part include Nguyen Bach Thanh Thu, Nguyen Thi Xuan Mai, Bui Huu Huy and Nguyen Hoang Lam.
The 2026 Golden Racket tournament is also a key international event in the lead-up to the 10th National Sports Games, which Ho Chi Minh City is scheduled to host.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mai Ba Hung, chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Table Tennis Federation, described the Golden Racket tournament as one of Vietnam's most established international table tennis competitions, with a history spanning more than three decades.
He expressed hope that its return would help promote the sport domestically and improve Vietnamese players' competitiveness on the international stage.
