First three medals for Vietnam at 2025 Asian Aquatics Championships

VOV.VN - Vietnamese swimmers delivered a good performance on the first competition day (September 28) of the 11th Asian Aquatics Championships in India, bringing home 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal.

Both Vo Thi My Tien and Nguyen Kha Nhi bagged medals during their first participation in the Asian tournament.

In the women’s 200m freestyle, My Tien came second after clocking 2’01”95, behind gold medalist Mingyu Luo of China with 2’01”31.

At the same time, a silver medal went to Nguyen Kha Nhi in the 1,500m freestyle with a time of 17’23”60, just behind Pac Tung Nikita Lam of Hong Kong, China, (17’08”36).

Previously, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien was the only Vietnamese female swimmer to win a medal at the Asian Championships.

Meanwhile, swimmer Pham Thanh Bao made history in Vietnamese swimming as he became the first male athlete to win a medal at the Asian Aquatics Championships.

Bao clinched a bronze medal in the men's 200m breaststroke final with a time of 2'12"50. The gold medal went to Haiyang Quin of China (2'09"46), and the silver to Iori Miyazaki of Japan (2'12"47).

Two years ago, Bao won the men's 200m breaststroke at the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA Games 32) in Cambodia after clocking 2'11"45, setting a record for the regional games. In July this year, he finished 27th with a time of 2'15"73 in the men's 200m breaststroke at the 2025 World Championships.

Also, on September 28, swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang ranked 8th in the men's 200m freestyle (1'50"26) and Tran Van Nguyen Quoc came sixth (1'49"94). In the women's 100m butterfly, My Tien placed 4th (1'01"57). In the men's 4x100m medley relay, the Vietnamese team clinched the 7th spot (3'47"88).

The tournament will last through to October 2.
