First three bronze medals for Vietnam at Asian Weightlifting Championships

VOV.VN - Vietnamese weightlifter Lai Gia Thanh delivered the country’s first medals at the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships after winning three bronze medals in the men’s 60kg category on the opening day of competition, May 11, in India.

The men’s 60kg event featured 10 lifters from across Asia, including representatives from Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Bangladesh and Kuwait. Notably, traditional weightlifting powerhouses China and Japan did not field athletes in this category.

Gia Thanh faced early pressure after failing his opening snatch attempt at 121kg. However, the Vietnamese lifter successfully cleared the weight on his second attempt before narrowly missing 126kg in the final lift, finishing the snatch discipline with a best result of 121kg.

In the clean and jerk attempts, Gia Thanh produced a stronger performance, successfully lifting 146kg to secure a combined total of 267kg.

The result earned the Vietnamese athlete third place in all three disciplines - snatch, clean and jerk, and total, bringing home three bronze medals for Vietnam.

This year Cholpang Un of the DPRK dominated the competition with lifts of 130kg in the snatch, 174kg in the clean and jerk and a total of 304kg, bagging three gold medals.

Three silver medals went to Aniqkasdan Mohamad of Malaysia with lifts of 122kg (snatch), 155kg (clean and jerk), and 277kg (total lift).

The 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships is running from May 11 to 17, featuring athletes from 28 countries and territories across the continent. Vietnam is competing at this year’s tournament with a five-member squad.

Alongside the competition, the Asian Weightlifting Federation is also holding meetings to discuss future development plans and regional activities for the sport.
