First gold for Vietnam at Singapore Open Track & Field Championships
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s athletics team secured a gold medal on April 15 - the first competition day of the 2026 Singapore Open Track & Field Championships.
Vietnam fielded two athletes in the women’s 100m final - Phung Thi Hue and Hoang Du Y. They faced strong competition from notable regional sprinter Veronica Pereira of Singapore, the reigning SEA Games champion.
In the final, Hue delivered an outstanding performance, finishing first with a time of 11.77 seconds to claim the gold medal. This marks Vietnam’s first gold medal at an official international athletics competition in 2026.
Her teammate Hoang Du Y finished third with 11.89 seconds, while Singapore’s Tan Elizabeth-An took silver in 11.96 seconds.
Pereira finished eighth in 18.17 seconds after sustaining an injury during the race. Earlier, she had won the women’s 100m gold medal at the 2025 SEA Games with a time of 11.36 seconds and earned silver at the 19th Asian Games with 11.27 seconds.
The tournament will last through to April 17.
